Koinè: Rita Marcotulli with Anders Jormin and Arto Tuncboyaciyan
Originally released in 2002, Koinè is one of the records that established Rita Marcotulli internationally. The trio with Anders Jormin on double bass and Arto Tuncboyaciyan on percussion builds a shared language that runs across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
Rita Marcotulli's Koinè was first released on 11 March 2002. The Greek term refers to a shared language, and the record is exactly that: a trio between Marcotulli on piano, Anders Jormin on double bass and Arto Tuncboyaciyan on percussion that puts different musical traditions in dialogue.
The program alternates the title track with eleven Marcotulli originals. Jormin's Nordic phrasing (long associated with the Scandinavian jazz scene around Bobo Stenson) meets Tuncboyaciyan's ethno-Mediterranean polyphonies and the writing of Marcotulli, who moves naturally across song, Brazilian music and jazz improvisation.
The Anaglyphos reissue brings the album back to the digital catalog after several vinyl and SACD editions over the years.
