Anaglyphos: thirty years of music in search of emotions
Founded in 1996 by double bassist Nello Toscano, Anaglyphos Records has spent three decades of Italian music working outside the trends. From Mediterranean jazz to instrumental research, the story of a niche catalog that has always put listening before market.
Anaglyphos Records was founded in Catania in 1996 by double bassist Nello Toscano. The name comes from ancient Greek (anaglyphos, meaning carved in relief) and accurately describes what the label has been after from day one: a sound in relief, legible, built from a few essential elements.
The first title in the catalog was Anaglifo by Toscano himself (1997), conceived as music for a Sicilian ballet by Roberto Zappalà and featuring Paolo Fresu on trumpet and Rosalba Bentivoglio on vocals. From there on the label has documented musicians who move across jazz, contemporary classical and instrumental research.
A catalog built without haste
Names that have passed through the Anaglyphos catalog include Maurizio Giammarco with the Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo, Rino Cirinnà, Stjepko Gut, Danilo Rea, Rita Marcotulli, Claudio Cusmano, Raffaele Genovese. The editorial line is not rigid, but there is a filter: a record has to hold up to listening years later.
We only release music that can stir emotions.
That sentence is the label's historic tagline and still works today as the only editorial criterion.
2022: the move into Mhodì Music Company
In 2022 Anaglyphos joined Mhodì Music Company, the holding that today gathers the group's labels (Anaglyphos, Mhodì Records, Comusì, d00b) along with publishing and distribution activities. The transition preserved the historic catalog and relaunched the imprint as the group's specialist for jazz and instrumental research.
The Anaglyphos catalog today counts 28 releases between albums, singles and EPs, several of which have been reissued and made available on all digital platforms throughout 2024 and 2025. Thirty years on, the label remains true to its founding stance: curated catalog, no rush, no compromise on quality.
