How to Approach a Record Label?

NewsTuesday, 23 May 2023

Tips and suggestions to present yourself at your best and make a good impression. Everything you need to know before sending your demo to a record label.

Approaching a record label and sending your band's demo can still be one of the most important moments of your career. People often think they need a finished album or MP3 files. In other cases, they consider the possibility of an in-person audition. None of that -- it all depends on who your email is addressed to.

Evaluate the track record and reputation of a label. You know well that there are plenty of "fraudsters" out there who promise dreams in exchange for your money. Stay away from all of that.

As a record label, we have decided to give you some tips to help you understand how to present yourself at your best and make a good impression.

1. Find the Labels Best Suited to Your Music

First of all, our advice is to look for the record labels you actually want to work with. For example, if your focus is Rock, we advise against contacting labels that deal with rap or hip hop music.

At Mhodì Music Company we are divided into four labels, each dedicated to a type of artist: Mhodì Records for pop and singer-songwriter, Anaglyphos for jazz and classical, d00b for rock and alternative, Comusì for Mediterranean folk.

2. Talk About Yourself and Your Goals

Even if you may not have a biography ready, when you approach a record label your goal should be to describe who you are, what project your band is pursuing, and what kind of music you make. Be honest and highlight a couple of songs you are particularly proud of.

Tell the story behind your album and what motivated you to record it. Being able to tell a story puts you in full control of your content and your art from the very beginning.

Avoid presenting yourself as the best artist on the music scene who is not being understood. Humility always pays off in this line of work.

3. Explain What Stage Your Music Is At

You will have the opportunity to let us hear your music even if it is a home recording. You do not necessarily need a finished album: if your project has potential, we listen to all the material we receive, and if we believe a project has real potential, we are the first to reach out to the artists and exchange ideas.

4. Do Not Give Up

Sometimes it does not depend solely on you. Some record labels, especially smaller independent ones, only have a couple of people handling these matters and they are not always available. We know how frustrating it can be not to receive any communication from record labels.

How to Get in Touch with Us?

Our process is really very simple. Through our dedicated Scouting page for new music submissions, you will need to enter information such as the artist or band name, your first and last name, city, phone number, email address, and a social media profile. Then, include at least one link to your tracks from platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud, and tell us a bit about yourself and your project.

And now... all that is left is for your music to move us.
