The Sound of Identity: Promoting Music in the Sicilian Language on Spotify

No editorial playlist speaks Sicilian. We decided to address the issue and make a difference in the world of digital music.

No Editorial Playlist Speaks Sicilian

Spotify is one of the leading music streaming platforms in the world, with a vast catalog of tracks spanning every imaginable genre. However, there is a gap that often escapes the attention of listeners and artists alike: the adequate representation of music in the Sicilian language.

We decided to address the issue and make a difference in the world of digital music. Through direct communication with Spotify's support service, we pointed out the lack of adequate representation of artists who sing in the Sicilian language within the platform's complex editorial playlists. This language, so rich in history and culture, is often mistakenly confused with the "Neomelodico" music genre or even ignored entirely in the current digital music landscape.

The main problem is that this situation has a direct impact on the streams and metrics of Sicilian artists. Very often, in order to achieve meaningful visibility, artists feel compelled to write lyrics in Italian or in other more widely recognized languages. This happens because, barring exceptional circumstances, it is difficult for them to reach the broader audience they deserve.

However, the Sicilian language is much more than a simple regional tongue. It is an integral part of Italy's linguistic, historical, and cultural richness, and its expression through music represents a unique art form that deserves to be heard and celebrated.

Our Playlist

To demonstrate our commitment to filling this gap, we decided to take action. We created a playlist entirely dedicated to the Sicilian language and its extraordinary artists.

We invite all lovers of Sicilian music and culture to follow it, share it, and suggest any artists we may have inadvertently left out by emailing: playlist@comusi.it.

We want to show that Sicilian artists and their audience are aware of this issue and wish to see greater inclusion and recognition within editorial playlists.

Our hope is that in the future Spotify and other music platforms will actively work to promote the Sicilian language and its extraordinary musical expressions.

Only then can we ensure that this important part of our culture is no longer overlooked and that Sicilian artists receive the recognition they deserve.
