Anaglifo (1997): the first release in the Anaglyphos catalog

Released in 1997, Anaglifo is the record that opens the label's catalog and sets its aesthetic. Conceived as music for a Sicilian ballet by Roberto Zappalà, it features Nello Toscano alongside Paolo Fresu on trumpet and Rosalba Bentivoglio on vocals. Eight tracks between jazz and ambient.

Anaglifo is the first title in the Anaglyphos catalog. Released in 1997 under the name of Nello Toscano, the label's founder, it is the score for the Balletto di Sicilia by Roberto Zappalà.

The lineup

Paolo Fresu on trumpet, Nello Toscano on double bass and electronics, Rosalba Bentivoglio on vocals. A spare ensemble, designed to support the dancers without overwhelming them, that holds up just as well outside the staged context.

The eight tracks

  1. Notte sul treno d'Arabia (7:26)
  2. Genesi (7:02)
  3. Il giardino odoroso (10:25)
  4. Stupro (6:27)
  5. La camera del console (8:19)
  6. Magma (6:11)
  7. La scalata (8:01)
  8. Frammento NT001 (4:40)

Fifty-nine minutes in total. Long-form pieces written to follow the choreographic arc: room for thematic development, for solos, for silence. Il giardino odoroso and La camera del console run past eight minutes and reveal the narrative dimension of the project.

The record that named the label

The title Anaglifo anticipated the label's choice of name (Anaglyphos, from the Greek). It is on this record that the traits of the future Anaglyphos catalog were defined: few players in the studio, dry recordings, attention to the breath between notes. The motto "We only release music that moves us" begins concretely with this album.

Three decades on, Anaglifo is now available digitally and remains the starting point for anyone who wants to understand where the Anaglyphos sound comes from.

Available on all digital platforms.
