Inside: the Toscano quartet and the Noema cycle
All compositions by Nello Toscano for quartet: Toscano on double bass and electronics, Alessandro Presti on trumpet, Seby Burgio on piano, Peppe Tringali on drums. At the heart of the record is the five-movement Noema cycle, with Clouds, Acid Rain and other originals rounding out the program.
Inside was released on Anaglyphos on 19 April 2022. All compositions are by Nello Toscano, performed by the quartet of Toscano (double bass and electronics), Alessandro Presti (trumpet), Seby Burgio (piano and keyboards), Peppe Tringali (drums).
The Noema cycle
At the core of the album is the Noema cycle in five movements, from Inside (Noema 1) to New One (Noema 5). Noema, in ancient Greek, denotes the object of abstract thought: the reference is openly phenomenological, and the cycle is built as five variations on the same harmonic-melodic core.
The nine tracks
- Inside (Noema 1) (5:47)
- Outside (Noema 2) (5:13)
- Leave (Noema 3) (4:47)
- Deep (Noema 4) (5:33)
- New One (Noema 5) (6:21)
- Clouds (5:13)
- Acid Rain (6:16)
- Ciò che porto in me (3:36)
- In solitude (5:12)
Forty-eight minutes in total. Clouds was the lead single that brought Toscano back onto the digital platforms when Anaglyphos joined Mhodì Music Company. Acid Rain and Ciò che porto in me close the sequence in a more introspective tone.
The bassist's aesthetic
Toscano's electronics is functional, never decorative: it extends the range of the double bass and lays out the beds across which trumpet and piano move. The quartet first heard on Inside reconvened in the studio two years later for Stories (2024).
