Patchwork Project 3: Nello Toscano Quintet with Cafiso and Rubino
Third chapter of Nello Toscano's Patchwork Project. A quintet with Cirinnà, Cattano, Burgio, Bagnoli plus two special guests: Francesco Cafiso on alto sax and Dino Rubino on trumpet. The album opens and closes with two homages, to George Russell and Lester Bowie.
Patchwork Project 3 was released on 22 July 2012, the third chapter of Nello Toscano's ongoing project. Forty-five minutes, eight tracks.
The lineup
Toscano (double bass), Rino Cirinnà (soprano sax, tenor sax, clarinet), Carlo Cattano (baritone sax, flutes), Seby Burgio (piano), Stefano Bagnoli (drums). Special guests: Francesco Cafiso on alto sax and Dino Rubino on trumpet.
The eight tracks
- Mr. Russel (6:42) — a tribute to George Russell
- Essaouira (5:56)
- Adhara feat. Dino Rubino (5:42)
- Sebybu feat. Francesco Cafiso (6:05)
- Hesitation (3:47)
- C&T (3:40)
- Brooding (6:35)
- Mr. Bowie feat. Francesco Cafiso (6:54) — a tribute to Lester Bowie
The album opens with Mr. Russel and closes with Mr. Bowie: two dedications deliberately placed at the start and end of the program. The reference to Lester Bowie nods to a less-played ballad by the Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpeter, Villa ti amo; the reference to George Russell nods to the father of the Lydian Chromatic Concept, the theoretical backbone of modal jazz.
